Basic literacy is the most basic and profound tool of empowerment and self improvement.
I ask the 14 year-old's - "How did you learn to read?" And this is what they remember...

I say that the latest brain research tells us that the ability to read must be grown and nurtured. Starting with their absorbant baby brains, they grow delicate dendritic patterns. Each book they read fits into the whole tree; is absorbed into the meaning of what has been read before. And before they know it, they have absorbed the imagination of one writer after another into their own.
A writer creates a whole world unto itself, a wholeness, a context.
I believe the whole novel world heals a tired brain, fragmented by multi tasking, distraction, interruption.
